“Valdemars Have” by schmidt hammer lassen Architects is an urban residential block located within walking distance of Aarhus, Denmark's main cultural attractions. By using and adding to the greenery of Aarhus, Valdemars Have seeks to be an oasis within the city and serve as a public, urban garden. Overall, there will be 106 apartments ranging from two-bedroom flats to penthouses with private roof terraces.
With the deliberate use of a masonry pattern, the design is reminiscent of old, red brick townhouses. The use and balance of elements like windows and balconies create a “playful and vivid appearance without the use of traditional ornamentation.” The brick transitions from light red to almost black, and a green façade “enhances the experience of a building 'planted' within a garden,” the landscape elements lending character and identity to the building. The ivy-covered brick of a nearby school creates connections to the residential block, subtly defining its context.
From east to west, the building volumes adjust to the surrounding scale. Toward the neighbouring street, Valdemarsgade and the former military hospital, the building lowers to four levels, while in other areas it has six stories. The layout ensures optimal daylight penetration. Existing paths along the north are replaced with promenades, encouraging public circulation between Valdemarsgade and Lønvejen.
A variety of plants and flowers will create garden-like, public outdoor areas. The biodiversity and micro-climate created will ensure residents enjoy peaceful common areas and experience nature in the city.
